There are a number of different ways to sightsee in Tallinn and many tourists simply choose to take a walk around the Old Town district and soak up the historic attractions. Other prefer guided bus tours, or even city bike tours of Tallinn, which take in many of the main tourist attractions around the districts of both Kadriorg and Pirita, and can be purposely designed to meet your requirements if necessary.
Particularly popular with tourists is the multi-language 'Hop-On Hop-Off City Tour', a double-decker bus stopping at no less than 13 different sites around Tallinn, where passengers can alight and re-board all through the day. Sights to look out for include the medieval City Walls, St. Catherine's Passage and the National Library of Estonia, while if children are with you, then the endless attractions within the city zoo are a must.

Offering a true taste of the medieval Tallinn of yesteryear, the remains of the ancient City Walls feature a number of imposing towers, which date from the 16th century. Named as Kuldjala, Nunna and Sauna, these towers are amongst the oldest of the towers and are open to the public, providing impressive views across the cityscape, particularly through the small arrow slits (loopholes). A total of 19 towers still remain, although there were once more than 60.

One of the city's most historic tourist attractions, Tallinn Zoo is a must-see for children and always makes for a great day out. The zoological gardens were established as long ago as 1939, when its lynxes were amongst the main highlights. Currently the only zoo in the whole of Estonia, the most popular animals of today include mountain goats, sheep, eagles, vultures and owls. Also onsite are many traditional favourites, such as elephants, zebras, camels, kangaroos and warthogs.

Want to learn more about all aspects of the city and its many appealing attractions? Then, the Tallinn Official Sightseeing Tour is for you. Split into two separate tours, first you will start with a bus tour, which takes in many of the sights just outside of the city centre itself. This is followed by a far more intimate and extremely insightful guided walking tour around the historic Old Town district. In total, you can expect the two tours to last slightly less than three hours. Don't forget to bring your camera.

A glorious building and one of the last Soviet structures to be built within Estonia today, the National Library of Estonia opened in 1993 and is known for its large arched entrance and round window. This is a truly enormous building and encompasses an entire city block. With thousands of books and important documents, other library attractions include Internet access and even an amphitheatre.

A truly ancient highlight within the Old Town district, St. Catherine's Passage is an important passageway linking both the streets of Müürivahe and also Vene. On the northern side of the passage itself, historic remains of St. Catherine's Church are still available. The summer of 1995 saw St. Catherine's Passage being truly rediscovered and gaining newfound popularity. Attractions include many buildings from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, along with artisan studios and galleries, where artists can be observed creating their masterpieces.
